After 25 years the long wait has come to an end. In 1996, Space Jam was released, starring probably the best basketball player in history, Michael Jordan and the Warner Bros. cartoons, the Looney Tunes.

At the time the film was a box office success; grossing more than $80 million in the United States alone and $ 230 million internationally, making it the highest-grossing basketball film in history.

Now almost three decades later the world is preparing to finally see a new installment of this franchise. Now starring one of the successors to the basketball throne, Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James.

The expectation generated by this film is impressive, the fans of the previous film, together with the new Looney Tunes and basketball fans that have been adding during the last 25 years, have long wanted it for this. Now, their moment has finally arrived and premiered on July 15, Space Jam: A New Legacy.

But now that the new film has been released, speculation has begun about the possibility of a third one and how much we would have to wait for something like that.

Space Jam Director Says He Could Do Another Movie With The Rock

“I never say never. It’s all going to be about whether the fans respond to this positively. But I think the bar has been set so high in terms of the first one with this global iconic superstar in Michael Jordan, and now the same global iconic superstar in LeBron James, who transcends sports. Who is that next person to put into that universe? And then you’ve got to find a script and story that’s good enough to not repeat what’s been done but will capture the spirit of it and keep it going. ” said New Legacy director Malcolm D. Lee

The name of the protagonist of the next film of the franchise has already generated discussions in Hollywood and the one that sounds the most likely is Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson who seems to be the ideal candidate in a story that takes him back to wrestling.

It is still too early to know for sure but it seems that this will not be the last movie we see of this fantastic universe.
